Maps location service how does it work??

    Hey everyone you know that small button in maps app that you press it locates you.Well my question is do you have to be connected to a wifi network for it to work or will it find you without you being connected to a wi fi network.At my house im connected to my wifi but when i press it it says unable to find location
    at my unclies house it works.How does it find where you are by wifi??

    using something called SkyHook. It doesn't use GPS.

    ? never heard of it but do you have to be on a wi fi network for it to work

    It locates by using the IP addresses of the nearby WiFi networks. You need to be connected to see the maps.

    ya well my ipod picks my ip up like this 169.35..5.5 something monged i have to put it in static so it will connect to my net why does it do thta

    yA idk i got rid of wpa2 i put wpa1 now it works
