check your outgoing mail server address, log-in and pass by going to Setting>Mail
Make sure they are what they're supposed to be.

The correct configuration info can be found at your email service provider's site.

    It is usually something like

    smtp.gmail.com
    smtp.yahoo.com

    Go to Settings>Mail>Advance

Check the site to see if you need to activate SSL
Check the site for the correct server port

BTW, Google also supports IMAP now. The drawback is that the messages have to be fetched everytime you read them, but the advantage is that it won't interfere with another email client you might use on a PC for example when receiving emails. If you choose POP instead, the messages read on your iPod won't show on the PC and vice-versa.
