Low volume connecting to PC speakers or boombox?

I'd like to be able to connect my Ipod Touch (2nd gen) to my boombox at work (Sony Explode) or amplified PC speakers at home but the volume output is incredibly low compared to either my XM receiver at work or any laptop connected to either the boombox or PC speakers, which sounds great.
Both the boombox and amplified PC speakers (with sub) have 1/8" stereo mini plug inputs.
The volume on my Ipod touch is set to max.

There's a major difference in sound level output from the Touch vs a Laptop (or XM receiver).

Surely, this has been dealt with and solved by others? What bumps the sound level up to equalize this, a sub or pre amp or some sort?
