Probably because his iPod have a bigger HD for example you have a 8gb and the pic has a 16gb.

Want more space buy another iPod with more space.

Actually I DO have a 16GB. It's not hard disk space I want, it's more room for Cydia apps. People say Cydia moves stuff in your iPod when you open it, but I see no change.

I wouldn't worry bout that too much. I have NEVER ran out of room through the last few years of jailbreaking.

Eh, I know I shouldn't worry about it too much but it scares me a bit when I'm installing something in Cydia and a message pops up saying "You're running low on space, delete photos and videos"

The / space you are talking about is the same for everyone on the 3.0 firmware regardless of the ipod capacity. Even my ipod has around 50 mb and mine is a 32 gig one. The only solution to this is to reduce installed apps if you ever run out of disk space, apps here means the one installed from cydia

You could always create a custom firmware with a bigger root partition...

Umm no, actually that's not possible at all for ipt2g users at this present point in time. Mostly because we do not have any tools for making a larger root partition *cough*XPwn*cough* . Hopefully once it's updated we'll be able to do so again.
