First of all there are only two iPads on sale now, the first is slow and not worth much now ($200 when it was $500).
Second, there are WAY MORE tablets better than the Fire. The fire is a nice tablet, but it's an E-Reader that can run Apps. It isn't fast. It's GPU lags behind in every game you play other than low-grade games like Angry Birds. No camera. No SD slot. No Bluetooth.
While I agree that the Kindle is overrated, its not nearly as terrible as you make it out to be. It has a few ICS roms available, and its got a CPU that's pretty similar to what's in the Galaxy Nexus. Its lacking in ram (512mb vs most Android tablet's 1GB), and being limited to 8GB of storage hurts. But for lightweight uses, that's not a big issue.
Cameras are a novelty at best on a tablet, and bluetooth is really only needed if you want to use a keyboard which, at 7" doesnt sound too likely as the keyboard would be bigger than the tablet. If you're willing to void the warranty by loading an ICS rom, you certainly could do worse for the price.
That said, since you're willing to pay a bit more I would add another vote to the Transformer TF300. Its effectively the same tablet as the Prime but with a slightly less bright screen on it.
Completely agree with you.
