It's very, VERY easy in the latest version of Ubuntu. I did it within a VM and I had Ubuntu on my pendrive within minutes.

i wasnt considering using wubi, since it will only be able to boot off the computer it was installed on, right?

btw, its an external HD, not flash drive

nope, as long as you use the boot menu to select that HDD then you should be golden.

Dude, it acts as a regular hard drive. Just partition the drive and install it.

    and one more thing,
if i needed to uninstall the wubi install (on external USB HD), would i just delete the whole thing, or add/remove programs?

Well, let me give you two methods.

The Easy Way Out (Chicken's way) - WUBI:
You could use WUBI, if you're afraid of partitions. You'd load the exe up and select the drive letter of your EX HDD, and then select how much space and your other options. Then, it will do it's thing. Now, whenever you wanna use Ubuntu, plug your HDD in and select Ubuntu on the boot menu. If you wanted to get rid of it, plug it in and go to Add/Remove on your computer (Not the EX Drive) and uninstall it. It should remove Ubuntu from the hard drive, and remove the mbr files.

    The Advanced Way - Partitions:
If you wanted to install it the regular, pop the LiveCD and reboot. Boot into the CD and go through the install process till you hit the partition manager. Find out what your EX HDD's name is (should be something like /dev/sdx with x representing a letter) and then click on that partition and install Ubuntu on it. Then, simply install and reboot.

If it doesn't go well, seek professional help at either http://ubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org
