Will it be possible to get linux on the new ipod with the current limera1n jailbreak, or does it need to be an untethered bootrom?

It will be possible soon. Just sit tight for a few months maybe and there WILL be a release. Porting it on to a locked system isn't easy. Let the developers take their time and they will give you a great, stable release.

Technically, you could do it with a tethered exploit. You would just need a computer to start the ipod and choose an OS. But right now, only 1st gen ipod touch, and the 2g and 3g iphones.

No need of stable releases, just an unstable will be fine
