"This version of Skype is only supported on unmodified iPhone OS 2.2."

Jailbroken users recieve this notice upon launch of the latest update of Skype. I assume this is due to the (now resolved) problems between Skype and MobileSubstrate. The notice does not impede function of any Skype features, however, and is just a one-shot notice. Still is curious though that App Store applications can realize that you jailbroke.

So, why do they care? Skype's apps are free?

That isn't exactly the hardest thing to figure out.

Mircix: This isn't an issue about pirating applications, it's that developers are getting better at detecting if you are jailbroken or on pirated software.

I wonder if in the future Apple can potentially detect what connects to its store and block 'modified' iPhones and iPods.

Well this is possible if you access the app store from the ipod. But I would like to see how they are going to block itunes. Also if they try to block itunes based on the ipod serial number, I think we can patch it out

    They can't do it currently.
Jailbreaking isn't ilegal. they can't just block devices that they want. they must proove these devices are using ilegal software and this definition doesn't apply to all the jailbroken users, only the cracked software users, which they can't distinguish currently.

Isn't it possible that this warning shows up on all iPods regardless of wether you are jailbroke or not?

Decided to open up Skype on my jb 2G, it said: "This version of Skype is only supported on unmodified iPod touch OS 2.2"

    1. Im using version 2.2.1, not 2.2
    2. It's called the iPhone OS on the iPod Touch and iPhone - not the iPod touch OS
