Not any price limit but i'd go for the cheapest there is.

    Try a netbook instead. Cheaper.

If it's available in Australia, I'd recommend the Advent Roma. It's pretty cheap but you get a good quality laptop for the price (I'm actually using my Roma right now!). It has a Celeron processor, 3GB RAM, 250GB hard drive and comes with Windows 7. The only thing negative I would say about it is that its a bit on the heavy side, so it's not the best choice if you are going to be moving it about a lot. Other than that, it's a pretty good laptop.

A Celeron processor will suck even for simple web browsing. It works fine for a whole week. Then it takes like 10 minutes to simply open the browser itself.

The Dell Inspiron line are excellent. I've bought two of them. (Inspiron 1545 both). I use mine for everything including software development. My wife uses hers mainly for Facebook and web browsing. They're pretty powerful units and priced well.
