What happened to the Lala app that was promised back in 2008? Did Apple reject it for competitive with its app store. They bought the company why not release a version that would allow you to play an album from Lala's library, then buy it from iTunes?

    Short: Yes.
Long: The whole purpose of Lala was so that you can buy a track for 1/10th the price of the same track on iTunes. For Apple, it's better to buy the company than to face the criticism (and negativity) of the public for turning down the app, etc.

The Lala iPhone app went to beta in Oct 2009, allowing nearly instant access to personal songs uploaded or previously purchased. It also allowed searches to be performed for any song available in its library. The full trial/30-second listening model applied. Purchase of web listens could be done as they were on the site, and playlists were integrated across the desktop browser and app. Apple obviously took notice, as the beta was quickly limited, app not approved, and company purchased in early December, as widely publicized.
