Pre features? Uh-oh, I hope they didn't move app development from ObjC to Javascript...

The Pre is definitely a competitor to the iPhone. IMO, it is a better PHONE than the iPhone with its multitasking and other various quirks. However, the iPhone is obviously a better media device.

I think Apple actually sees the Pre as significant threat. Remember, Apple always likes to be #1. They like being WAY ahead of the competition (note the comparisons in their presentations), and the Pre will be a VERY CLOSE competitor.

The Pre is the first phone since the iPhone that people have actually been genuinely interested in (I dont think the G1 created as much hype as the Pre has). This poses a problem for Apple. The Pre actually has almost EVERYTHING that people want in a phone: fantastic multitasking, physical keyboard, mms, copy/paste, touch screen, great internet browser, video recording, removable battery(?), flash(?), All with a fantastic UI.

The apps in the App store can no longer be used as a prominent selling point, since the competition is improving their core functionality. The only thing the iPhone will be dominant in will be the apps, and the ipod app.

Apple needs an improvement to the phones core functionality such as flash or copy and paste etc. in order to keep their momentum and dominance in the marketplace

Apple will probably need to make a new iphone to compete with the pre, with 3.0 software as a base, just like what happened to iPhone 3G + 2.0
