    Alright well I received my iPod Touch 8GB in the mail about 10 minutes ago. I have a few questions first though before I update it.

    First, how do I find out what version I have? Once I find out which version, should I update it to the newest version and jailbreak it, or jailbreak it from the version I have? And finally, can I permanently damage the iPod touch by jailbreaking? And if damaged and I revert the software, will Apple know I jailbroke it?

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Settings->General->About->Version

    Once I find out which version, should I update it to the newest version and jailbreak it, or jailbreak it from the version I have?
    It's all on personal preference. 1.1.1 is the easiest to jailbreak. 1.1.3 is the newest and has some cool features.

    And finally, can I permanently damage the iPod touch by jailbreaking?
    No.

    And if damaged and I revert the software, will Apple know I jailbroke it?
    No.

    You cant Physically break the ipod by Jailbreaking it , Apple wont know you jailbroken it before you restore to a normal firmware .

    to find out what your firmware is (probably 1.1.3 with January Upgrade) Plug in your New ipod to the usb cable provided to a computer and dont install 7.6 but keep 7.5 if you already have itunes .

    i suggest downgrading back to 1.1.1. i hope this helps

    Wait, so I shouldn't install 7.6? Because I just installed it 2 minutes before I read your post.

    Yeah because v7.6 supposedly breaks the OktoPrep hack. I have heard of problems stemming from 7.6 and I have heard of people with no problems also. I'm staying at 7.5 for as long as I can.

    7.6 doesn't break oktoprep. I've done it personally.
