Before I get into the now what part, let me see if I have all of this straight.

    I have a 3G Ipod Touch 8G.
    It came with 3.1.2.
I upgraded to 3.1.3 before I knew what I was doing.

If I understand correctly, the 3G ITouch is basically the same as the 2G ITouch in hardware except for some small changes. The 3G has a faster processor?

In fact the 3G is so close to the 2G that it will run the 2G firmware.
Or perhaps there is no such thing as 3G firmware, it's really 2G firmware with a different name?
Speaking of which, what is the firmware number that comes with a fresh 3G Itouch? I mean the numbers in the brackets after the 3.1.2? I forgot to write it down.

    So here's what I did. After I upgraded to 3.1.3 I replaced the 3G firmware with the 2G 3.1.2.
    Then I installed blackra1n.
I needed to run blackra1n about 3 or 4 times before it worked.

    My firmware reads: 3.1.2 (7D11).

So now that it's jailbroken, what do I do next?
    I downloaded and installed Cydia.
    There's a number 1 flashing when I run Cydia
It wants to do some of its own upgrading, but I didn't accept until I get the green light from you guys.

Really, what are the key apps I should get now, after the jailbreak?

Do the "Full Upgrade" from Cydia. For full functionality, what I do for all of the iPods that I jailbreak, I will go and install the PwnCenter repositories (find this in "Sections"). Now, go and install "All Sources" after you get the PwnCenter repo. This will give you all of the packages that you really need. Now, you can install SBSettings, Winterboard, etc.

Backgrounder, proswitcher, makeitmine, cydelete, five-icon dock, five-column springboard, glovepod, ipodpop, lockinfo, mxtube, sbsettings, safari download plug-in, winterboard.
Those are the basics and some of my favorites. Should be a good place to start.

sbsettings is one of the first things you should get.

I would stay away from most of the Mobile Substrate things. They're an easy way to kill your battery and hog RAM.

    ^ dont use so many

you can use mobile subtrates but try to turn them off when not in use to add battery and ram high.

Thanks folks for all the recommendations!
    I've noted them all.

About the above "when something says for 2.x only dont use it if ur on 3 or 1", the thing I don't get is that my system is now running on system 2 firmware. If that's the case, why couldn't I use 2.x software?

I'd really like to understand that part.

Before I jailbroke my machine I had to change the firmware to 2G firmware.

yeah, that's what I meant when I said most MS tweaks. many of them just hog RAM and kill battery.
