I just pre-ordered a iPhone 3GS from Vodaphone (due for release on Jan 14th). I have got a contract sorted and everything and was just windering what I do with jailbreaking it OOTB. I have always had iPT's and dont really know whats going down in the iPhone JB world lol.

So can you anwser these questions:-

    1) Baseband is all to do with unlocking, I dont need to unlock so I dont need to worry about the baseband upgrades correct?

    2) Jailbreaking is possible on 3.1.2, and when I get 3.1.2 and JB OOTB I should get my Cydia SHSH code asap?

    3) Blackra1n JB for 3.1.2 just like I would with the iPT 2G?

Cheers guys, anything else ive missed let me know. Merry Christmas!

Correct, but I'd try to keep an unlockable baseband anyway. It will help the resale value when you want to upgrade eventually.

Correct, but I think its a tethered jailbreak.

    Yup

    I think you got it.

You can still jailbreak it's just teathered
this means that every hard reboot (power shut off), you
will have to reload the jailbreak (30 sec)but if your not near a computer
when it reboots, your screwed till then. There is talk that greenpoison will
allow use of the phone as a unjailbroken device but before you can take advantage
of the jailbreak, you will have to reload the jailbreak. This is considered semi-teathered,
you can still use it at least just not the pirated crap.

Ok so the 3GS got a new boot rom. That will be on this device as it will be a late 2009 / 2010 model. So I will have to wait for a jb in that case.

If on the off chance it hasn't it's tethered? I thought it was the ipt 3G that was tethered only.. Hum. I do know what tethered is btw - the good (pah crap) old days with the 2G and 2.0

Tethered means when your phone restarts it goes into recovery mode and the only way to get it to start is to plug it in to your computer and run the jailbreak app again. You don't loose anything, it just restarts the phone.

I'm a little behind on this stuff too, didn't know about the new bootrom. From what I read though if you get a 3GS thats jailbreakable its going to be tethered.

I know what tethered is - again I had the 2G when it was tethered and was one of the people to make the USB boot tool...so I know dw.

But ok, jb but tethered until a full jb is found

NO the original 3GS phones jailbreaks fine and its untethered. Its the phones produced after the beginning of sept that have had their bootrom updated.
    They still jailbreak.......just tethered..........for now

    My 3GS is untethered

Intresting statement by bgizzle in a pm:
"There is no tethered jailbreak for the 3GS."

I was asking him if all "MB..." models for the 3GS were untethered. If I'm not mistaken, ALL MB models are untethered? There are some MC models that are untethered as well, but most MC models are tethered with blackra1n right?
