I currently have the iTouch 1st gen. I want to know the negatives of jailbreaking and does it affect ipod updates and is it a good idea.

do I have to keep updating the jailbreaking software or no?

If by iPod updates you mean the firmware updates, you will have to restore your iPod and re-jailbreaking it everytime you want to update. Other than that, there are no downsides to jailbreaking.

Like I said above, you will have to restore and re-jailbreak with each new update.
People ask me if they know me a lot. I've had to practically fight people for my username before!

So iTunes will still reconize it and let me buy and download correct? Also, will the iPod freeze crash or not work if I jailbreak it?

Correct. iTunes will have no way of knowing wether or not you are jailbroken. Sometimes there are little hiccups that will make your iPod temporarily crash, however, non-jailbroken iPods do it to (though not quite as often). 2.2 JB is very stable and will give you no problems.
