Just plug your iPhone in (Make sure you're running the latest iPhone firmware).

Then run BlackRa1n. If anything goes wrong or you don't like it, you restore.

Jailbreaking is safe. To make you feel a little more secure, the only way to brick an iPhone/iPod touch (to my knowledge) is to screw around inside of the iDevice. So jailbreaking is fine to do

To jailbreak, go to http://blackra1n.com and download the file to Windows or Mac (whichever you have) Then run blackrain with your iDevice connected to your computer and turned on. Then after like 20 seconds it will be jailbroken and you just have to wait for a reboot. And then your done!

Should I save anything to my iTunes? And can I get the apps that I have paid for to my phone once I jailbreak it?

yes jailbreaking doesnt erase anything and it doesnt cause problems with iTunes and syncing.
