It's legal! Apple just doesen't like to see it.

And here are some good apps:
    -SBSettings
    -numeric battery
    -WinterBoard (for themes)
    -MxTube (download youtube videos)

The only risk really is if you misuse an app that modifies system files or mess system files up in SSH, then it could leave the iPod in an unusable state. But regardless, you can always restore and start over again.

mm, Yes And No, Well Jailbreak is not that illegal, but the most people who jailbreak use it too get free apps, what normal cost money. Thats why Apple doesnt like Jailbreak, people will get the apps free and the makers of it wont get the money, and apple must pay them but they wont get money also

... So... Its not really Illegal, only if you use it for downloading free app, and also a reason why apple doesnt support jailbreak is because they say it makes the system slower and unstable...

What you posted made no sense. Apple doesn't have to give them money if the app isn't purchased from the AppStore, so Apple doesn't pay the developers for apps that are downloaded illegally. Nobody makes money of a pirated app, neither Apple nor the Dev.

In my computer class I am taking this course we are going of computer hack and other illiegal file tampering. it is apparently illegal to tamper with files from a company ex) (creating a custom firmware!!!) although if you pay for something it shall become rightfully yours in my view

And that's why it's illegal to distribute custom firmwares. However, if you modify it for personal use... that's another story.

It matters on the use. If you use it for normal stuff, like themes and things, it is completely legal.
