I have an iPod Touch 8GB 3G. I am currently running OS 3.1.2 and have successfully jailbroken using blackra1n. My only complaint is that the jailbreak is tethered. I cant turn off my iPod without re-jailbreaking.

With the new 4.1 OS out, I am considering upgrading and re-jailbreaking.
I am aware that their are several options for jailbreaking methods.

I would like to upgrade and rejailbreak without a tethered jailbreak , if possible.

Can anyone a jailbraking program that would fit my situation?
Please include Links to tutorial videos, if possible.

    Thanks

Well the only way you can get untethered is if you stay below iOS 4 and use Spirit or Star (jailbreakme.com).

Do you have SHSH for any firmware besides 3.1.2? It should say at top of cydia homepage.

Yes, I have SHSH for iOS 4.0 and 4.0.2
I am familiar with using ssh and winscp to transfer data but I am not familiar with what SHSH means.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

SHSH lets you go that firmware at any time.
So if you have iOS 4 SHSH, go to that by downloading the ispw and shift+restore on iTunes. Then go to jailbreakme.com ON THE DEVICE and slide to jailbreak. PM if you need links to the firmware.

by having the shsh files, you fake out itunes into thinking that apple is still allowing you to restore to that version.

When you try to restore, it sends apple a request, and only if it gets a valid answer back, will it allow you to restore.

If you start tiny umbrella, itunes is fooled into thinking that its response is apples.

If you change your hosts file, itunes request is redirected to Cydia's servers.

Either of thow two methods should work.

I was able to obtain modified firmware for OS 4.0
I know how to restore in itunes using sh*t to restore to the selected firmware.
Is there anything special I have to do to activate the SHSH. I'm not familiar with umbrella.

Also, Does anyone know if jailbreaking with jailbreakme will be untethered for ipod touch 8gb 3g, using modified 4.0 firmware?

Also, Since the firmware is modified, Will I be able to install up-to date apps that require OS 4.0.

I'm relatively new to this. I appreciate any advice.

    Thank you

The firmware is not modified and the jailbreak will work untethered.
All apps and updated Cydia packages will work.
