Do simple mode, and to see if you have the newest iPhone 3G, or not you can check the serial number.

I can't really explain it well. Read this :p

OK, so i ran tinyumbrella. The model number is:
    MB489X/B - iPhone3G
    and the serial is ***24

I had a look at this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939
and i am quite sure this is actually a iphone 3g. Not a 3gs. This is mainly indicated by the faded writing on the back, the apple logo is much brighter and the model number.

So it looks like my cousin go a bit confused and has actually bought a 3g then i just took what he said as fact...

Looks like we are back to square one. How should i approche the jb and unlock now that it has become clear that this is a 3g.

    Gps loss is ok.

    For step two it says:
Update/Restore to iOS 4.2.1 firmware using the IPSW file you just downloaded via iTunes 10.1.

Just making sure i am interpreting that correctly, does it want me to update the IOS to the official 4.2.1 via itunes shift+restore.

Just press restore, and it should download 4.2.1, and update you to it.
