I have a 3g (jailbroken) and my wife just bought a 3gs (new bootrom I believe - running 3.1.2). She is willing to trade phones with me. Would I be able to back up my jailbroken phone via cydia and then transfer that to her phone?

So, no. Not right now, anyway.

The baseband has nothing to do with him trading his phone.

@eberglar Yes you can use APTBackup in Cydia then backup an jailbroken application list in iTunes. But the problem is, is that when you restore it might force you to 3.1.3 which would make you lose your jailbreak permanetly on the 3GS right now.

Unless you jailbreak the 3GS real fast before you make it your own, then back up the ECID in Cydia on Saurik's servers if that is still possible. Then you would need to add Saurik's server to your hosts file.

Not sure where that quote came from but that statement is not true. It is the 3.1.3 update that prevents the unlock - 3.1.2 is still safe for an unlock. Not that it matters for the original question but I just wanted to throw that out there.
