I just recently got an iPhone 3GS straight from AT&T, MC model, which came preinstalled with 3.1.2. I was glad, because I knew that I could jailbreak it, even though it would be tethered.

I've always had perfect success jailbreaking my ipod touch 2g and 3g.

I decided to use "blackra1n" for a nice easy jailbreak. Plugged it in, ran the program, and saw the lovely image of George. Everything went as expected until it reset after the jailbreak. After that, nothing I did could get out of the dreaded black screen, and after an hour of research and trial, I was forced to restore through iTunes, and was bullied into 3.1.3

The only thing I did different than my iPod was the fact that I did not sync it with iTunes before attempting the jailbreak. I got home and was excited to customize, so I never went through the "Setup as new IPhone" or "Restore from backup of Gary's iPod"

Does anyone know if this is required to complete a successful jailbreak?

I'm debating on taking it in and trying to get them to swap it out.

Given that he was jailbreaking when it failed, and it was fresh from the store, I'd have to say he didn't get as far as running Cydia... so he's out of luck with this, unfortunately, especially if it has the new bootrom (which the MC serial code suggests).
