HUGE tutorial on 2G iPod touches

How to jailbreak the ipod touch 2G and fix just about any problem (for windoze)

    Jailbreaking the Ipod Touch.

The iPod touch 2G came in three diffrent Firmwares.

    These are 2.2, 2.2.1, and 3.0 (current)

This Tutorial will explain how to jailbreak both 2.2.1 and 3.0, since 2.2 was not around long enough to be significant.

Please read the ENTIRE tutorial before attempting anything.

    Jailbreaking 2.2.1

Out of the many ways i have jailbroken the 2.2.1 iPod touch, i find only one that is stable, reliable, and easy to use. No it isn't redsn0w, because even though it was reliable and stable, the 0.3 version (for 2.2.1) wasn't very easy to use.

The one i have found to be all the three is Voltage, by IPTF's own CalebMingle.
(pls note that with a little mod that will be explained this becomes an untethered jailbreak)
(Tutorial based off of the Iclarified Tut.)

    How to Jailbreak using Voltage:

    1. Download Voltage from here.

    2. Extract Voltage onto your desktop and open "Voltage - Jailbreaker.exe

3.If you don't have the Firmware file,
    (iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw)
    Click begin Download.

Wait for it to download, and then copy it to your Desktop.

    4. Follow the onscreen instructions to install The software library and libusb.

(VERY IMPORTANT: If you are using Vista or Windows 7 RC, please locate the libusb Executable before installing and right-click. Select the compatibility tab
and set the compatibility to Windows XP SP3. If you don't, you will lose control of your computer.)

    5. Click next and select the IPSW on your desktop. Make sure that the Installer.app box is UNCHECKED. Press Make IPSW.

A black Command prompt box will open. This is normal. it will take around five minutes to complete it's operations. When it automatically closes, click next.

    6. And stop Right There! We have to apply a patch to confirm that the Jailbreak is untethered (You dont need to plug it in to turn it on.)

    Install Winrar from here.
And install it if you don't already have it.

    Also, Download the Patch.

Go to your dektop, and right-click on the IPSW you downloaded. press Add files to this archive and a window should pop up. In the window, Navigate to

Firmware>all_flash>all_flash.n72ap.production>and add the patch you downloaded.

    Exit that window.

    7. Press Next, Turn off your iPod and plug it in. Follow the DFU helper instructions, found by obviously clicking DFU helper.

    8. Click ipod status (or something) and check if it really is in DFU. if it is, click next. Then press patch device. look at your ipod. it should be White. Close Voltage.

    9. Open iTunes and press okay to the Recovery mode message. Hold Shift on your keyboard and click on restore. Go to the Deskop and then to the Voltage directory. open JB_files and click on

    Custom_Restore.ipsw

    and not on Custom_Firmware.ipsw.

    Wait for the Restore.
    (DO NOT UNPLUG)

Your ipod should boot with cydia on the springboard.

    10. Run out of your house and show your friends how much of a 1337 hacker you are. Enjoy.

    Jailbreaking 3.0

    Jailbreaking 3.0 is relatively easy

(so easy, a n00b could do it)

We are going to use redsn0w 0.8 for this jailbreak.

    1. Download the tool from:HERE

    2. extract it to your desktop. and open the Redsn0w.exe file.

    3. Browse for the 3.0 file, usually found in

    Code:
    C:\Users\%usernane%\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
    4. Press next after it processes the firmware, and click next. wait for the download/patch/stuff.

    5. Plug in your iPod touch and turn it off. Select Cydia, and Uncheck icy (if checked.) Click next. and next again.

    6. Put it in DFU mode.

    2 Seconds of power button,
    15 seconds of both buttons,
and 15-20 (and sometimes 30) seconds of the home button.

    7. Wait for the Raw Pwnage to upload to your ipod.
    Warning (DO NOT DISSCONNECT)

    8. Wait for the ipod. even if it freezes saying flashing NOR etc. still DO NOT TOUCH IT. it is working don't worry. wait for it to finish and goto lock screen.

    9. Run out of your house, and show your friends how much of a 1337 hacker you are. enjoy.

    Troubleshooting

if your iPod ever starts talking back to you etc.,

    enter DFU mode by

    2 Seconds of power button,
    15 seconds of both buttons,
and 15-20 (and sometimes 30) seconds of the home button.
    (may take a few tries.)

and connect to itunes. restore to an original firmware and DO NOT restore a back up of a jailbroken iPod. re jailbreak. And follow the last step of an of these tutorials.

Hold both the power and home buttons for 10 seconds, then continue holding the home button until your iPod is recognized by iTunes.
