I'm in a bit of a catch-22 situation in that I need to jailbreak my Touch in order to be able to access my college's VPN to get wireless access, but I apparently need wireless access before I can jailbreak it. I currently have 1.1.1 firmware installed, and as I understand, what I need to do now is to jailbreak, then either download some iPhone apps or update to 1.1.2 and use oktoprep and touchfree to jailbreak that. Is there any way to do either of those things without my iPod having wireless access?

why do you need to jailbreak it to get access to your colleges's VPN?

There are many threads on this. Search.
You should not need to jailbreak to get on the network. Jailbreaking does nothing that will help you "hack" the network if that is what you want to do.

My understanding was that the Touch doesn't allow VPN, but will after either being jailbroken with touchfree or having iPhone apps installed.

Thanks, that might help. I'd have to buy a wireless dongle though. Is there no way to install apps using only the USB connection?
