SHSH is used if you ever want to downgrade again, and jailbreak. So, you can't downgrade the iPod Touch 4. So, you won't have to worry about that now.

When do you want to worry about it then? After Apple is not signing 4.1 anymore? Be smart, get tinyumbrella and save your SHSH for 4.1 now.

Or if you clicked "Make my life easier" in Cydia, you would have your SHSH's

You have to be jailbroken to have Cydia. How do you do that with an ipt4? Also, if you use tinyumbrella and choose Cydia as source you can be sure that it is saved both on your local machine and also in Cydia (even if it does not appear in the Cydia app yet) while activating it in Cydia only gets the SHSH queued for being saved. So using tinyumbrella you are always on the save side.

FW + device-specific SHSH for this FW = device-specific FW

Since the 3GS, iDevices only accept device-specific FW.

TinyUmbrella is used for backing up your SHSH blobs, and the point is, with your SHSH blobs, you can't downgrade. Downloading the firmware doesn't mean you'll be able to downgrade, you need both the firmware and your SHSH's to downgrade.

Note that it's only necessary for installing any firmware other than the latest.

True, since Apple is always suppyling the SHSH for the latest FW version. However, since constantly new FW versions are published and sometimes this happens without any warning, it is good to make a habbit of saving your SHSH as soon as they are available.
