You could try out the online version, see if you like it. I mean, its not exactly the same, but the game play mechanics should be similar.

If it's like Animal Crossing, I may never turn off my iPod again. xD

I downloaded it and played it for about an hour. I think it's great and is well worth the money and it reminds me very much of animal crossing. So far it seems like somewhat of a hybrid of the sims and animal crossing with a somewhat guided storyline at the start. It has great instructions to help you along and it appears to get less and less guided the more you go along. The mini games are somewhat childish and redundant but they are optional seeing as the villagers will do all the tasks without playing the games. So far it's awesome and seems very deep. If your debating it then I suggest getting it.

    It's very good...

It seems like forever for them to research something though.

the good thing about that is that they keep playing when your not there, and also i've noticed that villagers with 2 stars in something only go up by 2% when you play the mini games, but a villager with 1 star goes up by 6%, but if you arent doing the mini games the villagers with 2 stars go faster by themselves than the 1 star villagers.

to edit my first statement im not sure if that applies to everything yet, that may only be for building, also the game is AMAZING, getting better and better
