My iPod touch is working just great with few problems... I finally got push email to work with it, but I've run into a problem. When I lock the iPod touch, I lose my connection to the network. When I unlock the iPod, my connection is restored. Also, if it's plugged in and charging, it remains connected to the network.

Is this normal? Is the iPod touch supposed to drop its connection when it's locked and unplugged?

I sure hope it's something I can fix or change. It was so cool to be notified of your reply by my iPod! Except it's only because it's charging right now... =/

Yeah it's normal to preserve battery life. You could always not lock it, or if you are jailbroken, install insomnia.

It has worked in the past though... I remember leaving it beside my bed and being woken up by an email at 2am. Could they have recently added this as a 'feature'?

Also, is there a way to turn the screen off without locking the touch? Maybe that's why I still got that email while it was off...

The default (only) behavior for an ipod touch 2g is to go to sleep after a while and periodically, wake up (screen doesn't turn on), connect to the network, pull email, and go back to sleep. There are some programs that somehow tell the ipod not to disconnect (pandora), but it's hit and miss.
