I currently have my iPad on craigslist, last night I got a very interesting offer. I've been recently looking at purchasing my very first mac. So, a person texted me, wanting to trade an early 2007 MacBook. He said it has upgraded 4GB of ram, an upgraded 120GB hard drive, iLife 2011, and iWorks 09 & comes with a carrying case. I looked it up, and a 2007 Macbook runs anywhere from 250 to 400, minus the upgrades. I know nothing about computers, and I've never owned a Mac, so I wanted a "professional" opinion. I need to have my mind made up by Sunday, that's when he wants to trade. What would you do in my position? Thank you,
I'd keep the iPad. Knowing that the MacBook (which is the plastic one) was made in 2007 is worrying. The plastic MacBooks often have issues with the exterior getting stains, and plastic cracking off the from where the lid magnets are. And btw the macbook doesn't have backlit keys, thats the more recent models and the Macbook Pros. If I were you I'd keep the iPad, sell it, and look at eBay and get a MacBook pro for around 500-700. IMO don't do it. Have you seen his MacBook? Has he sent you pictures? How does it look? And also the MacBook is kinda...well...it's a discontinued product...WHICH, isn't a problem, but it just what it is. The value is decent. You get iLife etc. But iLife comes free on any Mac. IWorks is worth around $60. The ram and HDD is good. Very good for a 2007 MacBook. Ask how long the battery lasts. If the battery is old your spending more money for that as well. I suggest that you look at his MacBook first, either in person, or photos via email. As far as The OS, transition is easy. As in...easy...really ea...moving on. Um...the value of the iPad is worth more than the MacBook. For granted. But a computer offers much more. I still say your gonna pay something either way: A: make the trade and then maybe have dissapointment. B: keep the iPad and feel guilty or unhappy/disappointed that you didn't trade. If I were you I'd have a hard choice..even now I'd say go for it, but then again I'd not...anyways my opinion has been stated...and considering you are selling and don't want your ipad you also dont really lose anything...but good luck with whatever you choose...and ps: if you do trade you will love your MacBook. And, again, look at his MacBook before committing! Ask about the batt and for pics. That's all I have unless you have more questions.
Ignore the actual value of the Macbook and you're left with a computer which will/already outdated in terms of hardware. It's better to just purchase a new computer with current specs as it would be futureproof for what there is to come. I would keep the iPad just because there are better deals for you, whether it'd be trades or just cash.
All very good points, I'd love to have a new mac, but I don't have 1,100+. And I will be driving soon. The next NEW computer I get will be around time for college, still around 3 years away... He did send me pics, it runs Mac OS X.
Personally, I'd keep the iPad. If you really wanna a computer...does it have to be a Mac? Those specs are weak. Only 120GB hard drive? For the same $500 you could get a PC with 500GB or larger HDD and 6-8GB RAM... You could then either Hackintosh it or run Linux like I do...
Keep the iPad, I think the Macbook doesn't have many good years left, depending on how well he took care of it.
Stick with the iPad. The MacBook won't last you very long, and soon enough it'll be discontinued from future updates.
