Is there any apps out there in app store/cydia that can enable texting and calling through wifi?

    Any insights are appreciated.

    Cheers

There's TextPlus, not sure how well it works, but it says it works on the iPod Touch. There are probably other text messaging apps as well. And there are a few calling apps as well, the most popular seem to be iCall and Skype.

there are free texting apps (Appstore) but i havent seen any that allows text replying. and there is no 'free' calling app. you would have to pay for skype(appstore) credits or what not.

TextPlus worked really well when I had an iPod. Liked it a lot, only the fact that they couldn't start a conversation was the only bad part.

Texting apps as mentioned, you can also make Skype calls with an iPod.

Vonage has an app out now but that requires a payment plan or prepaid options.

Try textNow, they can text back to #####@textnow.me. And use iCall for 5 minute calling.

Skype is free if the person you are calling is using Skype as well. The pay plan is for calling a normal line or cell phone. Just FYI.

Not true, I just tried it. It just takes a few texts for them to set it up:

    1) Text the person's username to 60611.

    2) You'll get a reply asking for your message. Reply with your (first) message.

    3) You'll get another reply asking for what name you want to go as (must be 3 or more characters). Reply with the name you want to use.

    4) You're set up! From now on you can just reply to the messages like a normal text.

DO NOT get iCall. You have to use your own phone number, which is rather pointless...
