    You need to buy Apps before using them.
    If you bought one you can test it with iPhone SDK as far as I know.

    if I was a pirate I'd be wearing an eye patch, I wouldn't even own an iPod out of fear it might get wet in the ocean, plus no way to charge it, it'd be pointless.

    I just want to test them out, why would someone use a desktop as a portable media player just to save a dollar?

    The iPhone simulator can't run precompiled App Store apps.
    You would still need to buy the Apps.

    Regardless, any way of obtaining App Store apps at all other than legitimately from the developers or from the App Store is illegal, and may not be discussed here.
