Well you're gonna have to pay if you want it legally.

    3.0 firmware

Go to <removed> and get it. If you get a file that is in .zip format, rename the extension to .ipsw

Are there any disadvantages by obtaining it illegally? (Other than it not being legal?)

They're (Apple) not going to find out are they?

If you buy it you won't even have to worry.

I would've probably come to that conclusion if I even wanted to spend the money on buying it.

there are always chances that a 3rd party firmware and not the legit apple one could give you some problems on your ipod

Well its impossible (legally) to get it without paying. but in all fairness updates shouldnt have to be paid for, we buy the device for the hardware and software so we can get the most out of them and forcing us to pay extra is wrong. microsoft dont do it, nintendo dont do it linux although free anyway doesnt do it etc. so why us ipd users?
