Ok, my 16GB ipod is symlinked (with 84mb of free space on the OS partition and 1000's of megabytes on the media partition) and has categories installed, which means that my springboard has 12 icons, including the ones on the dock. However, my applications folder has 88 folders in it. Whenever I try to installe another applications, I get the spinning wheel of death. I can fix this by SSHing into my ipod and deleting the last application that I installed. It doesn't matter what I install, it will give me the spinning wheel of death. Is there a limit to the number of applications that can be in the application folder, reguardless of whether I symlinked and have freed up space on my springboard?

Yes, I believe you cannot have more than 84 applications on 1.1.3 and above.
You also cannot have more than the amount of slots on the springboard or space on your iPod. [Obvious Answers]

Someone said it crashes after 80 unless you use Categories.

I may have gotten it wrong. I don't have an iPod, so it's around 80 for 1.1.3 and above. Supposedly, below 1.1.3, you can have more, but I don't see why you would want that many apps. That we know.

I have what I like to call Software Aquisition Disorder (SAD). I have a compulsive need to have as much software on my ipod as possible....no matter how useless it is....

Aren't a lot of applications that were made recently not compatible with the earlier firmwares?
