I've never wanted to get a cover for my iPodTouch and I was always very careful with it. And then I got the tiniest scratch from who knows where and it broke my heart. I bought a $30.00 case and screen protector the next day.

Buy a nice cover you'll be guaranteed to never need to take off.

    Yes, it can be Scratched.
    Not easily, though.

The back of the iPod Scratches extreemly easily.
Even having it in a Pocket, by itself, will make the Back of your iPod Scratch.

However, the Touch-Screen is made of Glass, and although it is VERY Durable to Scratches, it can Scratch.

I recently bought a cover to protect the back, as I was collecting quite a few Scratches of my own, however the front of my iPod hasn't scratched at all yet.

Yup, tsukoi mentioned what I also wanted to say... Just get a protector for both the screen as well as body to at least minimize the appearance of scratches... It can't prevent scratches or smudges from appearing, but at least some protection is better than nothing ya?

Anyway, the iPod's screen was scratched pretty badly when I was on a recent holiday to Australia... Could be the lint in the pants pocket doing the deed... The protector bore the brunt of the scratches but thankfully, this did not affect multi-touch recognition though...

Yeah, it's hard to get scratches but it still is possible. I've had my iPod touch 1st gen since late Sep/Early Oct 07, and I have not used a case for the past year. It now has very very fine scratches on the screen, but I don't really care about them.
