We aren't exactly sure. We think it's a 2G. However, it rejects 3.0 firmwares.

But here's a pic from apple:

So we know 32 and 64 GB are 3rd gens.
But what about the 8GB? Does it reject firmware 3.0 only because it SHIPPED with 3.1?

Technically it's and updated 2nd Generation.

However, it's referred to as 3rd Generation.

no because the dev team said they don't support the iPod touch with 3.1.1 fresh from the box

In terms of hardware, no. Just a reduction in price and the inability to downgrade firmware back down to 3.0. As a result, you can't currently jailbreak it.

It also has a 6 hour decrease in audio battery life. Strange though.

idk...it had to be pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 in order to be jailbroken at 3.1.1 but the fresh out of the box 8GB iPod touch of this year is not downgradable so it can not be jailbroken yet

All i wanna know is what gen the MC086LL model is and what jb would i use... Those answers of "updated 2g but considered a 3g" are confusing.
