I find the auto-brightness thing of the ipod touch is quiet confusing. I have this brand new 3g ipod touch set with the auto brightness "on" and the brightness at 50%. While im at the dark room, and wake it up from sleep, the screen comes up a little dim adjusting to the lightening condition of the room, which is normal. But when i take it out under the strong sun light, it will dim down even more at first for about two seconds then brightening itself up to the sun light. Is this normal? Dimming down for 2 sec before lightening up to adjust to the brightness??? And then i bring it back to the same dark room i was in before, but backlight won't adjust back to dim anymore! It will just stay at the brightness level while it was under the sun. The only way i can put it back to dim is to press the sleep button and then wake it up again...If you never notice this, can you do a test for me to see if your ipod touch does the same thing as mine? i am not sure if its broken that i should take it to the apple store??? any idea? im so frustrated with it, please advise.....

It goes by what the brightness detector sees, which is located on the centre top of the device. A case, or even your fingers shadow could affect it

I do. I love it, probably my favorite feature upgrade from the Palm T|X I was using 2 years ago... Why, you ask? Imagine this shining in your face at 5:30 in the morning:

Except square, and making an annoying noise specifically designed to wake you up.

God, those were the Caveman Years.

I don;t use it,either. It's just as easy to openand set the brightness myself. besides, wouldn't that be a type of drain in the power or memory? I leave everything turned off that I don't absolutely need.
