My iPod will not boot to a normal screen, cannot connect to icons, and I cannot restore it.
If I were to take it into the Apple store, and they somehow fixed it and saw all my icons, I don't know what would happen. Is jailbreaking legal?

it is legal to hack any device that you have purchased, but Apple does not like you doing this

If they found out that you have done it then they will most likely laugh in your face for asking for thier help. If you get a good person at an apple store they might still help you though. Jailbreaking isnt illegal, but it is against Apples policies and as such they are not obliged to fix your ipod if its jailbroken.

Maybe someone can help me then. My iPod boots to a black screen with doe on it. Cannot connect through SSH, cannot connect though iTunes. Holding down top and home buttons together do not work.

Chances are they'll just give you a new one.

    No problems.

    How do you know?

Also, do you think they will be able to tell if it is jailbroken? I mean, if they do force restore it, then it will have to be connected to iTunes. If somehow they fix it, and then realize it is jailbroken, then it is fixed, and they can't just "break" it again.

If they force restore it they won't be able to tell it was jailbroken anyway.

    That's what I am saying.
The only other things they can do are:

    1. Fix it, then I have a fixed iPod still jailbroken.
    2. Give me new one.

When I turn it on, it says a root file cannot be found, so the iPod can't boot up.

I have an Apple Genius Bar appointment tomorrow at 3:30 EST. I'll let everyone know how it goes.
