Is it just me because everytime my iPod dies, if I hit the sleep and home button at the same time and hold it, it turns on with about 10% battery life?

I was just curious why it does this, and I tried my other iPod's and it just showed the battery icon telling me to plug it in so it can charge.

When I do this though, if I don't press them exactly at the same time it doesn't work, if I let go just a little, it doesn't work and if I wait to long after it dies, it won't work.

    Anyone know why this is?
I am using an iPod 2G MC model running 4.0.

P.S. If this thread is in the wrong place, please move it.

The short answer is so you have time to plug it in.
This is because when it completely runs out of battery, as you can see with any device, it will lose anything not permenantly saved which could include tabs, multitasking, date, and time. This is why newer devices such as the psp go into sleep mode, and older devices such as old ipods just run out and ask for date and time etc.
