I just upgraded someone's iPod through iTunes from 1.1.5 to 2.1.1, without paying the $10.

Since when was the upgrade free?

It's not. Bet that either he had it purchased on his account already, or else you managed to slip through the cracks that 1.1.5 was supposed to patch (re: 'next free update being 1.1.5 instead of 2.x').

Lol, I'm pretty sure it wasn't purchased. I figured it was something dealing with 1.1.5 though. I remember I had to pay, but I was on 1.1.4.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

Here's my theory. If you've already bought (or acquired) the 2.1 firmware and someone else restores on your computer with it, there's nothing iTunes can do, since they can't log into their iTunes account on your computer. iTunes can't assign firmware to individual devices, so when you pay for 2.1, you pay for the download, not to be able to use it for a specific device. Once you have it, you can restore other devices to it. I'm not sure, but this seems like it makes sense to me.

Yeah, if your account in iTunes had 2.x purchased, if you're flashing someone else's iPod it'll upgrade to that... because even if you don't sync, it'll let you restore to the most recent firmware revision as your iPod may not be in a condition to sync anyways (especially if it's screwed up).

    That makes sense.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

Yep by buying 2.x you can upgrade 5 iPoT's according to rules.

As of yesterday, I found out that I have a broken headphone jack. While troubleshooting, I restored on my father's laptop b/c my desktop is not working. But his computer did the same thing as the original posters... it updated me from 1.1.4 and now I have 2.1.

I'm taking it to the apple store tomorrow to get repaired. Does anyone know if this will be a problem? Seeing as though I did not purchase it myself... Can they notice?
