I'm trying to set up the tethered Jailbreak but I am having some problems. There are billions of posts on this thread and would never get answered so I think it would be worth writing a new one.

I have got as far as step 6 on the stickied Windows guide. I have downloaded iRecovery and installed drivers, put into DFU Mode, plugged in, closed iTunes and ran the command for step 6 of the stickied guide for Winodws. However, I just get the following message.

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please the see... blah, blah, blah.

If you're on vista I believe you need to install the libusb under compatibility mode and choose windows xp. after that it should work.

Same here. Running the installation in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2 gets it insalled correctly and all the ports are recognized. However, it still gives me the side-by-side error.

Hey, I am having this same problem and I tried installing the
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package (x86)
as suggested, and for me that didn't fix it.
    Any other suggestions?
