    Ipsw, zip the same??

    Hello.
I got a little bit anxious after buying a new itouch and tried to jailbreak it with Tys youtube video and failed. Im now trying to put back the 2.2.1 firmware in it, but itunes will not do so. I tried to download the .ipsw firmware and when I attempt to install it via itunes, it will not accept the folder which have became a zip file when it arrived to my pc. Itunes wants the ipsw-file and nothing else! The strange thing is that all the files available for downloading is named .ipsw file but will downloads as a zip-file and becomes useless for me/itunes. Im been sitting here for two days with a dead ipod. Does anyone have the solution for my problem? Thanks Mike

I would argue, but I can't, because I fully agree. But yeah, from what I've heard, ipsw =/= zip. You can even unzip an ipsw

Edit: Doesn't that just mean it's TRANSFORMERS, FIRMWARE IN DISGUISE

An IPSW is just a compressed archive like a ZIP file. When you download it through one of the various Apple links, it comes in a ZIP Format for some reason. In some cases, it'll extract and the IPSW/ZIP will be found in the Trash. You can even zip up the extracted contents and rename the extension to IPSW and it'll still work.

You will also most likely get prompted with a message along these lines:

If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable.

Are you sure you want to change the extension?

I am not entirely sure what the prompt will be. It should be something close to that, but press yes on it anyway.
