    Hi
Download the programm "Voltage" and follow the instructions.
    http://u.dopaul.com/Voltage.rar
It is the only way to reboot a ipod when he shut down.
    Have fun

When you're in DFU mode, the screen stays black. Nothing will show up, no logo, nothing else. The "Unrecognized device" isn't a bad thing, since it means that your computer is at least recognizing that something has been plugged in. I'm not sure about iTunes not popping up, but try opening iTunes manually and seeing if you can restore it from there.
Also, you should be using Quickfreedom, unless you actually want to stay tethered. Maybe you do, but untethered>>>>>>>>>>>tethered. Unless I've misread anyways.
