My iPod touch 2g was working fine before work and and plenty of battery life, but when I went to turn it on, nothing, black screen. My computer also says an unknown USB device was plugged in, and is still unresponsive. I know a completely unresponsive iPod is common and is fixed with restore or DFU but my home button is broken. Is there any way to bring it back to life without a home button?

You need the home button to put it in dfu mode. I would have un-jaibreaked it if the home button broke.

Actually I jailbroke it BECAUSE the home button. I wanted the close button widget because it's way out of warrenty. I know there aren't programs to put it in DFU but possibly to force it into restore. But since my computer isn't recognizing it I'm thinking it won't do anything.

If you open up your iPod, you can just short out the button conducting block (the springy gold thing soldered on the motherboard) against the metal LCD display frame - it acts just like a button click. I do this all the time when I remove digitizers and need to click the button for testing.

I tried blackrain actually to put it in recovery but no response.
I would love to take it apart and fix it my Dad wanted to but it looks pretty difficult to open and I'd hate to screw it up more.

EDIT: Hmm so it's working suddenly? Not sure what happened honestly I just tapped the back of it, held down the buttons and it came back on. Just hope it doesn't happen again.

Do you know, approximately, how long it took for it to come back on?
