Keep holding home. The boot logo shows for about a second.

Click restore in iTunes, then when it's done extracting the software and it says "Preparing iPod for Restore", and you see the Recovery Mode logo on your iPod, kill the iTunes process.

You can just enter the redsn0w commands then restore. No recovery mode needed.

    Try this
Hold the volume up key when you restore. I know it sounds stupid, but I had a boot logo that always gave me error 6, and I did that, and it worked.
Hold down right after you have selected the firmware, and let go when it says "Verifying iPod restore"
