DFU Mode always works, its just a matter of doing it right.

Plug it into your computer regardless of if iTunes recognizes it or not.
Hold the Home & Power buttons for 10 seconds until it goes black (may already be black)
After your done with that, release the power button but keep holding home until you hear a beep on your comp.

After you hear the beep, press the RESTORE button in iTunes.
Dont Shift-Click to a downloaded firmware.

After that, you should either be on 2.2.1 or 3.0

    Try a jailbreak with redsn0w.

    TO JAILBREAK:
    3.0 - redsn0w 0.8
    2.2.1 - redsn0w 0.3 (beta 3 - command-line)

This happened to me awhile back. i had to restore back to 2.2.1 to get it to work, then update to 3.0 again before trying to jailbreak again
