So, I'm ready to buy a handheld to complement my DS.

I'm looking to play psx and older on it, so my question to these forums: Is the total emulation package (controls and speed) good enough to warrant buying an IPoT over a PSP?

I could really care less about PSP games, and I'm a music journalist of sorts, so it'd be nice to have a real mp3 player i suppose.

PSP is more of a gamer. iPod is more of a Multitasking device. It's really your choice.

iPod is way better for music. PSP can't even handle sub-folders. Nor does it fit in your pocket, and if you do fit it in your pocket, it's pretty difficult to change songs or pause/play without taking it out.
As for games, I don't know how the iPod touch PSX emulator works, and I don't think there is one for PSP (though it wouldn't surprise me.)

PSP is FAR better for gaming, while the iPod Touch is more of a media/versatile/handy device to have. (Which includes gaming, apparently)

    OK, heres the deal.

    Multimedia-iPod
    Battery Life-PSP
    More 3D full games-PSP
Better graphics- iPod touch (ONLY 32 and 64GB 3rd gen) old models are worse. PSP games have better graphics than ipod games for now, but thats b/c most games are not optimized for the 3rd gen.
Controls-Both, it depends on the game type
    Web browsing- iPod
Speed- iPod ONLY 2nd and 3rd GEN!
Screen size ans quality- PSP (not PSP Go!, only old ones)
Jailbreak- Both depending on the model
    Applications- iPod
    Speakers- PSP. ipod speakers suck
Memory- iPod (goes up to 64GB)
Price-PSP (compared to true 3rd gen (32 and 64 gb)

    Overall: iPod:8
    PSP:7
Winner: iPod touch 3rd generation 32/64 GB

The emulator isn't that great but the iPod has some good games of its own. Of course coming here people are gonna tell you to get an iPod, likewise if you went to a PSP forum they would tell you to get a PSP. justonesp00lturn said that the PSP doesn't have sub-folders, but if you know what you're doing you can hack PSP's for lots of different things. Google PSP pandora battery hack. It just depends- iPods are much more versatile but if your main focus is psx you should go for a PSP. Being unbiased, I would recommend an iPod just because of the sheer amount of stuff you can do with it.

If your main focus is psx, maybe you should get a psx, lol.

If you're going to be hacking either one, I'd say iPod is much more versatile. But if you don't want to bother with iTunes (making the switch from drag-and-drop to iTunes syncing can be confusing and intimidating, at first) or with firmware updates and needing to re-jailbreak, go with PSP. I will say that the PSP has sh*t for memory (have to buy memory cards) and the internet browser is probably the worst I've ever seen (I wasn't able to successfully access an entire website... ever.)
At this point, I'll step out of the majority of the conversation. I gave my PSP to my sister when I got an iPod Touch, and in the time I had it, I never hacked it, so I'm not sure what all those crazy homebrewers have been up to. Also, I don't have any emulators on my Touch, so I can't speak on the quality of its psx emulator.

I think we can all agree on one thing, though:
Don't ever buy a PSP Go, for any purpose, at any time.
