You may be plugging your iPod into an unpowered USB port (keybaord or USB hub) and it may be dying cos of battery. You should always plug your iPod into a USB port directly on your computer/motherboard as they will give you the required power output.

Yes um... I want to force restore my ipod, the whole procedure to make itunes identify it and begin downloading the restore file works fine. But while the software is downloading my ipod just turns off and I have to press the hold and home to get to restore mode again so that my ipod could restore. But even then I get this message: "there was a problem downloading the ipod software for the ipod "ipod". An unkown error occurred (-48)."
The USB port that I am using is powered and is directly connected to the computer.

Sounds brickish to me, hardware fault maybe. Tried searching the Apple support site for "Error 48"?
