Download ZiPhone 2.6b for future use.

Either enter DFU mode manually, or through ZiPhone.
    To enter DFU mode manually:
When iPod is plugged in and iTunes is open, hold Power + Home until iPod tunrs off.
Release the power button, but continue holding the home button until iPod recognises an iPod in recovery mode. Nothing will be on your iPod's screen, just be patient and wait about 15 seconds.

On Ziphone, just go under Advanced Options and click "DFU Mode".

Try going through the Found New Hardware wizard--- not connecting to Windows Update and choosing the driver manually. Then you'll have to restart your computer, but it should recognize your iPod after that. btw are you on x64?

Try reinstalling iTunes or restoring on a different computer. You could also try using ziphone and putting your iPod into normal mode.

Do you mean you got out of Recovery mode???
l was getting that itunes crap as well. There was no sign of the restore icon. l had to unplug the cable from ipodtouch to computer - then turn ipod off. Plug cable back into comp. and straight away press Home and Power buttons together until the connect to itunes icon comes up, then release both buttons and itunes should come up with a box telling you what to do. Press shift and restore together for the 'backup' firmware or just press restore and it will update and restore.
