How can Apple charge for a firmware update when several of my applications now require the update? The updates should be free. If you don't download it, then you have to sacrifice more and more of your applications, etc.

Have most folks purchased update 3.1?

    Is it worth it?

Yes, it's worth it, and if you bought 3.0 then 3.1 is free. If not it's only 4.95 as opposed to the 9.95 that some paid for 3.0 when it came out.

And it's called capitalism, they can charge for whatever they want, be glad they don't charge for every firmware update that comes along, they could if they wanted.

iPhone users pay a monthly contract and get the update for free. You have to pay $5 pretty much once a year for a major update. Its not much.

    +1

The iPod has everything iPhone is, except cell phone reception, sms, and a camera. And iPod users only have a 1 time fee.
I have an iPod, and sure, I'd rather have 3.0 AND my 10 bucks, but whatever, it's just 10 bucks =P

    (It's 5 bucks now, btw)

If you hit the restore button it may give you the option to upgrade and restore for free

I'm glad it is, or else they could just skip iPod touch in the major firmware updates, if they didn't get a little compensation for it.

I don't see what the big deal is, apple is adding significant features in 3.0, so they're charging you a mere $5 for the upgrade. I, along with many others, paid $10 for this update, so you should be thankful apple has discounted it.

As for the apps that require you to upgrade to 3.0, think of it as (new) programs that run on windows vista and 7, that don't work on XP. You pay for vista/7, right?

No matter what others say, do not attempt to download 3.0 for free. It's just plain wrong, and may screw up your ipod. And I'm sure apple wouldn't want to help someone who's tried to get their paid update for free.
