I am trying to restore the original firmware, 2.2.1 and I even downloaded the correct firmware iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw and shift-clicked'ed it in iTunes, both in DFU mode and the Cable - iTunes icon mode. It sorta goes through the proccess, the touch shows the Apple and the whole bar filled, and iTunes just keeps showing "Waiting For iPod..." and does that hours on end. And sometimes when I try DFU mode, I get somethign like "There is no software for this ipod at this time, make sure your itunes is newest version." I have tried rebooting reinstalling itunes, and removing all its App Roaming Data (from my documents).

Use the connect to iTunes link in my signature to fix the problem.
