I've had my ipod touch (1gen) for awhile now and it started randomly shutting off while i was charging and it also misreads the battery level. The battery life seems fine, but charging can take a long time having to start it back after it shuts off. I had it play music all last night and it never shut off but when i charged it in my car this morning it shut off after a few minutes (same with computer). The device says it has random battery levels too, like it may say half one minute then say full the next. I tried a recovery through itunes it didn't fix it. It's also out of warranty.

Is this just a weird case of needing a new battery or something more?

ipods misreading battery level is pretty usual. mine also does it. especially after booting up it often says "=% battery left but after a few minutes running the bat-symbol will jump higher.

it's just a prob of software i think...just restore and try again

if you completly turn your ipod off and then on it takes away almost 40% off the bar but it goes back up in a min

Well obviously his warranty has expired, or else he wouldn't have said so.
