are you sure it's not already in DFU mode?
or the battery could have died?

nah, I had that yesterday (after failing to get 2.0 lol)

    either:
hold the power button + home button (at the same time), while holding the button, connect ur ipod to the pc....itunes should c it and u should get a msg that it's in recovery mode etc.... if that doesn't work

press the home button, keep holding it and connect the ipod to the pc

Make sure it is plugged in when you enter DFU mode.

The secret appears to be in the succesful operation of DFU mode.
Make sure that the phone is connected to your PC (this worked better than on my Mac) and then hold down the power button until the iPhone is off. Let go and then hold both power and home for 10-12 seconds (depends upon how you count!) let go of the Home key and wait for about 5 seconds iTunes should now recognise your iPhone. I know that you already know this and that you are probably on the edge of frustration right now - as I was! The screen on the iPhone should remain blank when iTunes recognises it - I think this is key otherwise you are just in recovery mode.
